New 2020 National Challenge Competition: nine-week triathlon club virtual challenge in the USA

87

USA Triathlon has announced the start of the 2020 National Challenge Competition (NCC) presented by Amp Human – a nine-week virtual challenge for members of USA Triathlon-certified clubs.

Designed to get triathletes excited about off-season training at the club level, the NCC enables clubs across the United States to go head-to-head to see who can log the most training miles in swim, bike and run over a designated time period.

For the first time, the NCC is housed on the FitRankings platform. This seeks to improve user experience and functionality while making it easier for athletes to log verified training miles, track progress and view leaderboards. The competition is live as of Wednesday, January 15, and will run through Tuesday, March 17.

“USA Triathlon is proud to work with Amp Human as our presenting partner, and FitRankings as our digital platform, for a new-and-improved National Challenge Competition,” said Matthew Stone, Director of Constituent Engagement at USA Triathlon.

“Club participants can now track and log their workouts more seamlessly than ever before and see where they stand in the competition at any point, while a revised NCC format and scoring structure ensure the challenge is fair and accessible to all participants. We look forward to bringing USA Triathlon-certified clubs from across the country together to get the 2020 season started on a high note.”

Amp Human will support NCC by providing special offers on its flagship product, PR Lotion, to all participants throughout the challenge, as well as prize packages for individual and club winners.

“Amp Human is thrilled to be a presenting sponsor for the 2020 National Challenge Competition and promote excitement around off-season training,” said Naomi Clarkson, Chief Growth Officer at Amp Human. “PR Lotion is the perfect training tool for this time of year. With its benefits of improved muscle efficiency and enhanced recovery, the ultimate result is increased training capacity – meaning USA Triathlon athletes can start 2020 strong and lay the foundation for future achievements in competition.”

The challenge is split into three sessions, each one spanning three weeks. The first week of each session is focused on swim mileage, the second on bike mileage and the third on run mileage. To equalize each discipline, non-cycling disciplines are weighted more heavily (1 swim mile is equivalent to 10 bike miles, while 1 run mile is equivalent to 3 bike miles).

After each three-week session, awards will be given to the top individual male and female and the top individual collegiate male and female per discipline, and for the session as a whole based on mileage totals.

At the end of the full nine-week challenge, awards will be given to the top-three clubs and top-three collegiate clubs overall and per discipline based on average mileage per athlete. Individual awards will also be given to the top-three male and female competitors and the top-three collegiate male and female competitors based on total mileage throughout the nine-week period.

Individuals can register under their affiliated club and start recording workouts via FitRankings at any point throughout the challenge. Swim, bike and run workouts can be synced to the platform automatically via most GPS-enabled workout devices, smartphone apps and smartwatches — including Garmin, Apple Watch, FitBit, Misfit, Polar, Strava, Suunto, Google Fit, RunKeeper, Apple Health and MapMyFitness.
